Why should I do the right thing?

Posted on January 28th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

Why should I do the right thing? Because of Morals? Because of Religion? I thought this was the Internet, and I thought I didn’t have to do the right thing!

A new startup, http://www.dotherightthing.com/, is supplying transparency and putting pressure on companies to do the right thing.

Quoted from there tutorial:

* Share information that you discover about companies’ impacts on people and the world
* Learn about the activities of companies directly from people and rate the impact of the important ones
* Track the “social performance” of companies in real time

What do you think? I’d like to see a poll on whether DoTheRightThing.com is good or bad (Positive or Negative in their terms). Take a look at the Techcrunch post for more info.

Let's have a HyperCamp!

Posted on January 27th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

I really like the idea of Dave Winer's
HyperCamp.

In fact, I'd like to leverage the interest of the GSATC and our 4,000 plus members to organize and hold a HyperCamp in Greenville, SC.

I have a Question for Dave Winer:

Have you held a HyperCamp yet? I haven't heard any more about this idea from you.

Was there a reason you did not hold one or did the idea just not materialize yet?

I'd love to hear your ideas about helping us organize a HyperCamp - please email me dstevens.gif: . If you're in the area, attend the first HyperCamp!

VMware Server Beta Review

Posted on January 27th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

Well, it's the end of the day on Monday - the day they released VMware server Beta.

vmware server:

First things first

They call this VMware Server Beta.  Now, I'm not going to bet my life on it, but this is hardly beta.  VMware GSX server has been around for years and that is essentially what this product is.  So, while the name may be new, the product is not!

Installation & Upgrades

I've now installed it on 3 different systems, and it's been out less than 24 hours.  I installed it on my laptop and used it to run some linux VMs where I was using VMware workstation.  I've also used the remote console to connect from my laptop to my remote servers running VMware.

I installed it on a staging server (Windows 2003 Web Host - Windows 2000 Server VM) where I was using an older version of GSX server and I installed it on a new Windows 2003 server running a Windows 2003 R2 VM.  In both of these cases I had to upgrade existing VMs.

For the most part the upgrades went smoothly.  On one I upgraded the VM from the latest version of VMware workstation VM to the VMware server VM and it worked flawlessly.

The second upgrade was where I upgraded from an old (several years old) version of GSX server.  The upgrade of this VM wasn't as easy.  Once I upgraded the VM it changed the CMOS and once I logged into windows it found all new hardware.  Several reboots later I installed VMware tools which basically upgrades you from a 640×480 16 color experience to something more reasonable like 1024×768 32,000 colors.

For some reason, the VNware tools icon in my system tray has a red X through it.  That can't be good.  I'm not sure what it is, the VMware tools appear to be working.

So, if you're upgrading from an old version - make a backup first!

More coming tomorrow…

New VMWare Server Beta

Posted on January 27th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

Lucky me, I had my Credit Card out last Friday - ready to purchase VMware when I read this in WServerNews email newsletter:

VMware is going to announce a free Server product Monday 2-6-06.

So I decided to delay my purchase…

Well, they did!  VMware server essentially replaces the GSX server line.  It actually adds Virtual SMP (Virtual Multiple Processors) and a few other goodies.

salesforce.com downtime on December 20th

Posted on January 27th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

Maybe I'm late to the game, since it's just over 1 week but salesforce.com was down for most of the day last Tuesday (December 20th, 2005).

For a company that touts "No Software" - it sure does charge a lot.  We pay over $100 per month per users for Salesforce.com and their is no excuse for the downtime.  As a web host, I expect more than that out of my providers, and my customers for less than $20 per month expect less than 8 hours of down time!

For a company doing hundreds of millions in revenue and who recently spent about $50 Million on "MirrorForce" - they need to do a much better job!

What's worse - this is the longest we've seen, but we see some downtime every month!

Salesforce.com should have:

  1. Have a backup plan.  Not just data backup, but a fail-over plan.  Anything over 1-2 hours is inexcusable.
  2. They should have communicated with us during and/or after.  I've yet to hear anything about it!
  3. What happened during that time… we were unable to do work…, but what about our customer-facing elements like web-to-lead, web-to-case, customer self-service and the knowledgebase?  Were my customers able to access that information?
    Who knows?

Big Brother Is REALLY Watching…

Posted on January 27th, 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

A research team led by the Electronic Frontier Foundation recently
broke the code behind tiny tracking dots that some color laser
printers secretly hide in every document.

The U.S. Secret Service admitted that the tracking information is part
of a deal struck with selected color laser printer manufacturers,
ostensibly to identify counterfeiters.

You can see the dots on color
prints from machines made by Xerox, Canon, and other manufacturers of
the printers investigated so far. The dots are yellow, less than one
millimeter in diameter, and are typically repeated over each page of a
document. In order to see the pattern, you need a blue light, a
magnifying glass, or a microscope (for instructions on how to see the
dots, see):

How to get more women…. by Dave Winer?

Dave's a bright guy and many times a pioneer in the weblogs and software world.  However, on this one Dave, Stick to Software.  Trust me! ;-)
