Just to jump in on the pricing issue - other places can give you similar quality service, for less then the price you stated here. We offer Exchange Hosting with 500MB plans staring at $9.99 per month per user. More info at www.123together.com

I use hosted Exchange from Intermedia with a Blackberry. It is cheap -- and Exchange with a BES is still FAR better than anything gmail has.

I'm using Zimbra (open source product (with commercial support) bought by Yahoo) and it addresses many of the issues you have with Exchange like full Outlook sync as well as Blackberry, Palm, Windows Mobile, and iPhone support. I use a company called 01.com and pay about $7 per month for basic service (1 account, 1 GB storage, no mobile sync). I think you'll find their rates are much more competitive than Hosted Exchange and they have Zimlets (things like Salesforce.com integration, Contact Collector, Contact Cleaner, etc.). Zimlets are just companion apps that make working easier. Some of them do anyway, others are just useless (for me anyway). I'm moving as much to web based IT items as I can. I now use Linux on my desktop and much of what I do is at customer sites so being able to access everything remotely is a huge plus.

I found this to be an interesting debate. Small businesses are probably on the fence while new entrepreneurs are looking at creative ways to reduce costs and increase productivity.

Man I an a bit confused. Management is pushing me to find a way to switch from our in house Exchange server. I still can't find the facts as to why we should stay with Exchange or switch, of course switching means less for me to deal with and ultimately out the door for me.

Great discussion, but recent updates have made Google the clear winner (in my eyes.) Google Sync provides "Exchange-like" synchronization with iPhone and Windows Mobile devices. It even uses the ActiveSync protocol.

With the Outlook Sync tool, you can use Outlook as you would with Exchange.

The best feature (has to be paid for). In the Premier Edition ($50/user/year), your team can use Group Scheduling; the same as Exchange.

As a bonus, you also get 25 GB of online storage with the Premier Edition.

Microsoft just increased their online limit to 5 GB, from 2 GB. Microsoft's Hosted Exchange is $120/user/year.

If you add the comparison of sharing documents, the cost of Microsoft's offering increases by $60/user/year, for a total of $180/user/year.

For the same $50/user/year, Google Apps includes Google Docs.
